When a Lock Change Beats a Rekey

Plenty of people who call us to change their locks really need a rekey, and we will tell you when that is the cheaper option. But there are clear cases where new hardware is the right call, and these are the ones we see most often in Parkland.

The key fights you

You wiggle the key, pull the door toward you, or try twice before the bolt moves. Locks that struggle like that for months usually give out completely on the worst possible day, and rekeying cannot repair worn parts inside.

Sun, sprinklers and humidity got to it

Parkland is inland, but west-facing front doors bake in the afternoon sun and many get soaked by the irrigation system every morning. Finishes peel, cylinders stiffen and springs weaken. After enough years of that, replacing the lock is usually the real fix.

It is builder-grade on a front door

Plenty of Parkland homes, even large and expensive ones, were finished with standard builder hardware that was never upgraded. Swapping in a stronger deadbolt and a solid strike plate is one of the cheapest ways to make a front door genuinely harder to get through.

Someone tried to get in

Gouges in the frame, a bent strike plate or scratches all over the cylinder. The lock may still work, but it has been compromised, and leaving a damaged lock on your door is not something we recommend.

You want a different kind of lock

A keypad so the kids, the nanny or the dog walker do not need a key, a lever instead of a knob, or a smart lock that lets you send codes and see who came and went. These are some of the most popular upgrades we install in Parkland homes.

The house does not match

A gold handle set on the front door, satin nickel on the garage entry and black on the patio door. Matching every door to one finish and one key makes the house look finished and cuts your keyring down to a single key.

What We Install in Parkland Homes and Businesses

Deadbolts and handle sets

Single and double cylinder deadbolts, knobs, levers and full entry sets, including the large decorative handle sets common on Parkland front doors, in finishes from satin nickel to matte black and oil-rubbed bronze.

Impact and multipoint hardware

Impact front doors and French doors to the patio use multipoint locks that send bolts into the frame at the top, middle and bottom. We repair and replace this hardware, including the strikes, using parts matched to your exact door — a very common job in newer Parkland homes.

Mortise locks

Less common in Parkland homes, but found on some custom entry doors, older office and storefront doors and commercial buildings nearby. Depending on the door, we swap the mortise lock body or convert it to a modern cylindrical set.

Keypads and smart locks

We install them, program them and show you how they work, and you can add or remove codes on your own afterward. Our keypad and smart lock options page covers the models that hold up best in South Florida heat and humidity.

Commercial hardware

Storefront cylinders, lever handles, panic bars and exit devices, plus master key systems, all covered on our commercial locksmith page. A good fit for offices, clubhouses and the businesses along State Road 7 and Hillsboro Boulevard.

The smaller locks too

Hurricane shutter locks, mailbox locks and file cabinet locks — the small locks that cause real frustration when they stop working.

Lock Grades Explained Simply

Residential locks carry an ANSI/BHMA grade from 3 up to 1, and that grade tells you more about a lock than the name on the box. Here is how the three grades play out on a Parkland home.

Grade 3: basic residential

The entry-level grade and what most production builders install. It works for bedroom and closet doors, but it is not what we would put on the door that faces the street.

Grade 2: a sensible front door

Noticeably stronger parts and years more life for a small increase in cost. For most Parkland front doors, garage entries and rental properties, this is the grade we recommend.

Grade 1: commercial duty

Designed for doors used hundreds of times a day, like storefronts, clubhouses and building entrances. On a home, it can be worth it for the main entry door.

Here is a detail most people never hear: a lock is only as strong as the strike plate and screws holding it. Even a Grade 1 deadbolt gives way if short screws hold it in soft wood. Every install we do uses long screws and a reinforced strike that reach into the framing.

Before You Book a Lock Change in Parkland

There are no prices posted here, because the hardware you choose is most of the cost. We give you a specific, line-by-line quote for your doors before any work begins, and that quote is what you pay.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I change my locks or just rekey them?

Rekey when your hardware is solid and you just want old keys retired. Replace when the lock is worn, damaged or cheap builder hardware, or when you want a different style of lock. We will tell you which makes more sense for your door.

Can you change my locks the same day in Parkland?

Usually. Standard deadbolts, knobs and levers in common finishes are normally on the truck. Large decorative handle sets, impact-door hardware and special finishes sometimes have to be ordered to fit, and we will tell you that up front.

Do I need HOA approval to change my front door lock?

Often, and it is worth a quick check. Most Parkland HOAs have rules about the hardware or finish on exterior doors. A rekey almost never needs approval, because nothing about the door looks different afterward.

What lock brands and grades do you install?

Quality residential and commercial hardware from the major manufacturers, in Grades 3, 2 and 1. For most Parkland front doors we recommend Grade 2, for commercial doors Grade 1, and we walk you through the difference before you decide.

Can you match the finish of the rest of my house?

As far as the manufacturer’s range allows, yes — satin nickel, matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, polished brass and others. If your house has a mix of finishes now, we can match everything to one finish and put it all on one key.

My door has an impact or French door lock. Can you replace it?

In most cases. Those doors use multipoint locks that throw bolts into the frame at several points. A photo tells us the exact model, and if the right set is not on the truck we order it.

Is there a warranty on new locks?

Yes. Everything we install comes with one year of coverage on parts and labor, and if anything we fitted fails in that year, we come back and fix it.

Can you install a keypad or smart lock instead?

Yes, and it is one of the most popular upgrades in Parkland, especially for busy families and rentals where codes are easier than handing out keys. We install it, program it and make sure you are comfortable adding and deleting codes before we leave.
