When a Lock Change Beats a Rekey

Plenty of people who ask for new locks just need a rekey, and we will tell you when that is cheaper. But on the ocean, some locks really do need replacing, and these are the cases we see most in Highland Beach.

The key fights you

The key sticks, the door has to be pushed or pulled, or it takes two tries to lock. When a lock has been struggling like that for a while, it usually gives out for good at the worst time, and rekeying cannot repair worn internals.

Salt air got to it

Right on the ocean, salt air attacks every lock on every balcony, entry door and cabana. Cylinders seize, springs weaken and finishes pit. In Highland Beach, corrosion is the number one reason we replace locks.

It is builder-grade on a front door

Many units and homes still have basic hardware on the front door. A better-grade, corrosion-resistant deadbolt with a solid strike plate is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make.

Someone tried to get in

Scratches and gouges around the cylinder, a bent strike or marks on the frame. A lock that has been attacked may still turn, but it is weaker now, and we recommend replacing it rather than trusting it.

You want a different kind of lock

A keypad so caregivers, cleaners and family do not need keys, a lever instead of a knob, or a smart lock that lets you send codes from up north. A perfect fit for seasonal owners.

The house does not match

Different finishes on different doors, added over the years. Replacing everything with one finish and one key tidies up the home and your keyring.

What We Install in Highland Beach Homes and Businesses

Deadbolts and handle sets

Single and double cylinder deadbolts, knobs, levers and full entry sets in finishes chosen to stand up to salt air, from satin nickel to matte black.

Impact and multipoint hardware

Impact entry doors and balcony French doors lock at several points along the frame. We repair and replace this hardware, strikes included, with parts made for your door.

Mortise locks

Found on some older condo buildings and custom homes. We replace the lock body or convert to a modern set, depending on what the door can take.

Keypads and smart locks

Installed, programmed and explained, with codes you can add and remove yourself — even from out of state on many models. See our keypad and smart lock options for what holds up near the ocean.

Commercial hardware

Storefront cylinders, lever sets, panic bars and exit devices, and master keying, covered on our commercial locksmith page. Useful for condo buildings, clubrooms and service areas.

The smaller locks too

Hurricane shutter locks, mailbox locks and file cabinet locks — the small locks that cause real frustration when they stop working.

Lock Grades Explained Simply

Residential locks are graded by ANSI/BHMA from 3 to 1, and the grade matters more than the brand. Here is what each means for a Highland Beach condo or home.

Grade 3: basic residential

The basic grade most builders install. Fine indoors, but not what we want on an oceanfront entry door.

Grade 2: a sensible front door

Stronger parts and a much longer life for a small increase in price. This is what we usually recommend for Highland Beach unit doors and home entries.

Grade 1: commercial duty

Built for heavy daily use, like building lobbies, clubrooms and service doors. Sometimes worth it on a home’s main entry too.

One thing people rarely hear: a lock is only as strong as what holds it in the door. Short screws into soft wood let even a Grade 1 deadbolt give way. We install long screws and a reinforced strike that bite into the framing.

Before You Book a Lock Change in Highland Beach

Prices are not posted because the hardware you choose is most of the cost. We give you an itemized quote for your doors before starting, and the quote is the bill.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I change my locks or just rekey them?

Rekey when the hardware is in good shape and you just want old keys retired. Replace when salt air, wear or damage has gotten to the lock, or when you want a different kind of lock. We will tell you which fits.

Can you change my locks the same day in Highland Beach?

Usually. Standard deadbolts, knobs and levers are normally on the truck. Impact-door hardware, mortise sets and special finishes may need to be ordered, and we tell you that up front.

Do I need HOA approval to change my front door lock?

Often, yes. Most Highland Beach condo associations have rules about unit-door hardware and finish. A rekey rarely needs approval, since the lock looks the same afterward.

What lock brands and grades do you install?

Quality residential and commercial hardware from major manufacturers, in Grades 3, 2 and 1. For oceanfront doors we lean toward corrosion-resistant Grade 2 or better, and we explain the options before you choose.

Can you match the finish of the rest of my house?

Yes, within what the manufacturer makes — satin nickel, matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, polished brass and others. Mismatched doors can all be brought to one finish and one key.

My door has an impact or French door lock. Can you replace it?

In most cases. Those doors use multipoint locks that throw bolts at several heights. From a photo we can identify the model and order the matching set if needed.

Is there a warranty on new locks?

Yes. Everything we install carries one year of parts and labor coverage, and if anything we fitted fails in that year, we come back and make it right.

Can you install a keypad or smart lock instead?

Yes, and it is very popular in Highland Beach with seasonal owners, who can give codes to caregivers, cleaners and guests instead of keys. We install it and show you how to manage codes yourself.
