When a Lock Change Beats a Rekey

A lot of people who call for new locks really only need a rekey, and we will say so when it saves you money. Some situations, though, really do need new hardware, and these are the ones we see most often in Pompano Beach.

The key fights you

You have to jiggle the key, pull the door toward you or try twice. A lock that has been fighting you for months tends to give out completely at the worst moment, and a rekey cannot fix worn internal parts.

The salt air won

On the barrier island, by the pier and along the Intracoastal, salt air attacks locks every single day. Cylinders get stiff, springs get weak and finishes pit and flake. After a few years near the ocean, new hardware is often the real answer.

It is builder-grade on a front door

Plenty of Pompano homes and condos still have the cheap builder-grade lock on the front door. A better deadbolt with a solid strike plate is one of the least expensive ways to make that door far harder to kick in.

Someone tried to get in

Pry marks on the frame, a bent strike or a chewed-up cylinder. Even if it still turns, the lock has been weakened, and we would rather swap it than leave a known weak spot on your door.

You want a different kind of lock

A keypad so the housekeeper, aide or dog walker never needs a key, a lever in place of a knob, or a smart lock that texts codes to guests. Ideal for Pompano vacation rentals and seasonal condos.

The house does not match

Different finishes on every door, put in at different times over the years. Replacing them all with one finish and one key cleans up the look and cuts your keyring down to a single key.

What We Install in Pompano Beach Homes and Businesses

Deadbolts and handle sets

Single and double cylinder deadbolts, knobs, levers and full entry handle sets, in finishes from satin nickel to matte black and oil-rubbed bronze, matched to your home.

Impact and multipoint hardware

Impact and French doors lock at several points along the frame. We repair and replace that hardware, strikes included, with parts built for your exact door — something we see constantly in renovated Pompano homes.

Mortise locks

Common on older homes and condos near the beach and in Old Pompano, and on many storefront doors. We replace the lock body or convert to a modern set, depending on what the door will allow.

Keypads and smart locks

Installed, programmed and walked through with you, with codes you can add and delete yourself. See our keypad and smart lock options for the models that stand up best to salt air.

Commercial hardware

Storefront cylinders, lever sets, panic bars and exit devices, and master keying, all on our Pompano Beach commercial locksmith page. Useful for the shops on Atlantic Boulevard and the industrial parks off Copans Road.

Shutter, mailbox & cabinet locks

Hurricane shutter locks, mailbox locks and file cabinet locks — the salt air gets to these first, so they often fail before the front door does.

Lock Grades Explained Simply

Door locks are graded by ANSI/BHMA from 3 up to 1, and the grade tells you more than the brand name. Here is what each grade means for a Pompano Beach home.

Grade 3: basic residential

The basic grade most builders install. Fine for bedroom and closet doors, but not what we would put on a door that faces the street.

Grade 2: a sensible front door

Much tougher inside and longer-lasting for a small step up in cost. This is the grade we normally recommend for exterior doors on Pompano homes, condos and rentals.

Grade 1: commercial duty

Made for doors that open hundreds of times a day, like storefronts, restaurants and building entrances. Sometimes worth it on a home’s main door as well.

Good to know: the strike plate and screws matter as much as the lock itself. A Grade 1 deadbolt held by short screws in soft wood is only as strong as that wood. A proper install uses long screws and a reinforced strike.

Before You Book a Lock Change in Pompano Beach

We do not post prices, because the hardware you pick is most of the cost. You get a specific, itemized quote before we start, and that is what you pay.

"Joe was fantastic and reasonable! He arrived on time and took his time to explain the work that needed to be completed. I feel much less anxious after having the lock changed at my daughter’s place."

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace my locks or rekey?

Rekey when the hardware is in good condition and you just want old keys to stop working. Replace when the lock is worn, corroded, damaged or low quality, or when you want a different type of lock. We will tell you which fits.

Can you come out today to change my locks in Pompano Beach?

Usually. Standard deadbolts, knobs and levers are normally on the truck. Impact-door hardware, mortise sets and special finishes sometimes have to be ordered, and we will tell you that up front.

Does my association need to sign off on a lock change?

Often, and it is worth a quick call to find out. Many Pompano condo associations, 55+ communities and HOAs have rules about exterior door hardware and finish. A rekey almost never needs approval, since nothing looks different.

Which deadbolt brands and grades do you use?

Quality residential and commercial hardware from the major lock makers, in Grades 3, 2 and 1. We usually recommend Grade 2 for Pompano front doors and Grade 1 for businesses, and we explain why before you choose.

Do you carry finishes to match my home?

Within what the manufacturer makes, yes — satin nickel, matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, polished brass and more. If your doors are mismatched now, we can bring them all to one finish and one key.

Do you work on French door and impact door locks?

Usually. These doors use multipoint locks that bolt into the frame at several heights. A photo tells us the model, and we order the right set if it is not on the truck.

How long is your warranty on new locks?

Yes — one year on parts and labor for everything we install. If something we put in fails during that time, we come back and make it right.

Do you install keyless entry locks?

Yes, and it is a popular upgrade in Pompano, especially for vacation rentals and seasonal condos where codes beat handing out keys. We install it, set it up and show you how to manage the codes yourself.
