When a Lock Change Beats a Rekey

The key already fights you
Jiggling, lifting the handle, turning twice. A lock that has been getting worse for months is telling you something, and the day it finally refuses is usually the day you are standing outside in the rain with groceries.
Salt air got to it
East Boca, the barrier island and anything within a mile or two of the Intracoastal eat hardware. Pitted finishes, chalky white corrosion, a cylinder that grinds — at that point re-pinning a dying lock is money spent twice.
It is builder-grade on a front door
Developers fit the cheapest compliant hardware on the house and nobody ever revisits it. On a main entry in this climate, stepping up a grade is one of the few security spends that is genuinely worth the money.
Someone tried the door
Pry marks on the jamb, a bent strike, a chewed cylinder face. Even if it held, the internals and the frame have taken a hit, and a lock that has been attacked is not a lock you want to keep trusting.
You want a different function
A keypad so the cleaner does not need a key, a lever instead of a knob for someone with arthritis, a double-cylinder deadbolt beside glass, a thumbturn on an interior door. Function changes mean new hardware by definition.
The house does not match

Lock Grades, in Plain English
Residential locks are rated by ANSI/BHMA on a three-point scale, and the number on the box is a reasonable shorthand for how long the thing will last. Nobody explains this in the hardware aisle, so here it is.
Grade 3 — basic residential
The cheapest compliant hardware, and what most builders fit. Fine on an interior door or a shed. On a Boca exterior door exposed to salt air and afternoon sun, it is the one we quietly suggest moving up from.
Grade 2 — the sensible front door
Meaningfully tougher internals and a far better service life for a modest step up in price. This is what most Boca Raton homeowners end up choosing for entry doors, and it is what we recommend most often.
Grade 1 — commercial duty
Built for doors opened hundreds of times a day. Right for storefronts, offices, association common areas and rental buildings — and occasionally for a homeowner who simply wants the best on one door.
One thing worth knowing: the strike plate and the screws matter as much as the lock. A Grade 1 deadbolt held by three-quarter-inch screws into a soft jamb is not a Grade 1 door. Long screws into the framing behind the jamb cost almost nothing and are part of how we fit every deadbolt.
Before You Book a Lock Change in Boca
- Check your association rules first. A good number of Boca condos and HOA communities govern exterior door hardware — finish, style, sometimes a building-wide keying scheme. One call to the office before you choose hardware saves a second trip. If they say no to new hardware, rekeying gets you the same security outcome with the door looking identical.
- Text a photo of the door edge and the existing handle. It tells us the backset, the bore, whether it is multipoint, and what finish to match. This one habit is the difference between a same-day fix and a return visit.
- Say “impact door” or “French doors” if that is what you have. That hardware is ordered to the door and is not interchangeable with a standard deadbolt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I change my locks or just rekey them?
Rekey when the hardware is sound and you only want the old keys retired. Change the lock when the key sticks or grinds, when salt air has eaten the cylinder, when it is thin builder-grade hardware on an exterior door, when there is damage from a break-in attempt, or when you want a different function such as a keypad. Plenty of Boca houses end up doing both — rekey the good doors, replace the tired one.
Can you change my locks the same day in Boca Raton?
Usually. Standard residential deadbolts, knobs and levers in common finishes are stocked on the van, so a straightforward change is often a same-day appointment during our 9 AM to 7 PM hours, seven days a week. Multipoint hardware for impact and French doors, mortise locks and specific designer finishes are ordered in, so those take a little longer.
Do I need HOA approval to change my front door lock?
Often, yes — and it is worth one phone call first. Many Boca associations set rules on exterior door hardware covering finish, style and sometimes a building-wide keying scheme. Interior doors and most single-family exteriors are not an issue. If your association says no to new hardware, rekeying gets you the same security result while leaving the door looking identical.
What lock brands and grades do you install?
Mainstream residential and commercial hardware from the brands you would recognise, in ANSI Grade 1, 2 or 3 depending on the door and the budget. Grade 3 is basic residential, Grade 2 is the sensible middle for a front door, and Grade 1 is commercial duty. On an exterior door in Boca we generally steer people away from Grade 3 — not to upsell, but because the coastal climate is hard on cheap hardware.
Can you match the finish to the rest of my house?
Yes, within what the manufacturer makes. Satin nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, matte black, aged bronze and polished brass are all common around Boca. Text a photo of your existing handle set when you call and the closest match comes on the van rather than being guessed at.
My door has an impact or French door lock. Can you replace that?
Usually, yes. These run multipoint hardware that throws bolts into the head and the sill as well as the jamb, and the replacement has to match the gearbox, the backset and the door manufacturer — it is not interchangeable with a standard deadbolt. Say impact door or French doors when you call, and a photo of the edge of the door helps enormously.
Is there a warranty on new locks?
