Standard locks can be picked or bumped, and their keys can be copied at any hardware store. High-security locks stop both. I install them for homes, condos, rentals and businesses across Palm Beach and Broward, and I can walk your property first to show you where the weak spots are.
High security is about three things: how hard the lock is to defeat, how hard the door is to force, and who can get a copy of the key.
High-security hardware costs more than a standard lock, so it is worth knowing what you are paying for and when it is worth it.
A normal pin-tumbler lock can be picked or bumped open by someone with a little practice and a cheap tool. High-security cylinders add extra locking elements, like side bars, angled pins and hardened steel inserts. That makes picking, bumping and drilling far harder. Many models carry UL 437 ratings, a standard that involves actual attack testing.
Stamping a key "Do Not Duplicate" does not stop anyone from copying it. With a restricted, patented keyway, blanks are not sold to hardware stores or key kiosks. A copy has to come through the locksmith who holds your system, with your permission. If you have handed keys to tenants, contractors or staff, that is how you get control back.
Rentals and Airbnbs with frequent guests, landlords and HOAs managing many keys, homes with valuables or a home office, and businesses. Also anyone who has had a break-in or lost keys they cannot account for. For an ordinary home where you just want old keys to stop working, a simple rekey may be all you need. I will tell you honestly which fits.
Most break-ins are not picked locks, they are kicked doors. The weak point is usually the short screws holding the strike plate into a thin door frame. A good high-security install includes a reinforced strike and long screws into the framing. That alone makes a door much harder to force.
When I come out for your estimate, I look at every exterior door, the sliders and the garage entry. I check what you have, how it is installed and where the weak spots are. Then you get a straight recommendation: what is worth upgrading, and what is already fine. There is no pressure to buy anything.
It is a lock built to resist picking, bumping and drilling, usually with a patented key that cannot be copied at a hardware store. Brands like Medeco and Mul-T-Lock are common examples.
For many homes, yes, especially rentals, homes with frequent visitors or anyone who wants to control key copies. For a home where you just want old keys to stop working, a rekey may be enough. I will tell you honestly which makes sense.
Only with authorization. The key blanks are patented and restricted, so stores and key kiosks cannot cut them. Copies come through the locksmith who holds your system, for people you approve.
